What Is a Sand Dune

Ever wondered what is a sand dune and how is it formed? Mmmh! A dune is a hip or a hill of sand accumulated at a place mostly common in the desert or along a coastline.

What Is Needed For A Sand Dune to Form

For a sand dune to form, mostly it is usually facilitated by wind. When strong winds blow, they carry and deposit soil grains in a sheltered area mostly behind an obstacle such as a rock or vegetation. Continuous depositing later forms a huge dune or even a few other dunes resulting from the same process.

They normally don’t have constant shapes as the wind keeps on reshaping and resizing them depending on the wind strength. This then is why, if one is lost in a desert, chances of retracing back one’s steps are normally zero as the winds normally keep on reshaping the dunes.

Mambrui Dunes Theoretical Formation

The sand dunes ridges of sand formed by waves normally do originate from somewhere right? In the case of Mambrui Malindi being a dune along a coastline, there is a theory of how they came to be.

For dunes formed along the coastline, the prevailing winds mostly blow from the ocean to the mainland. For Mambrui, the sand may have been eroded and carried from the beach shore and deposited at its current location today.

Also, the coastal rocks around the nearby areas may have been eroded and weathered from the northern regions of the sand dunes and continuously are transported by the Sabaki River which is nearby.

Once the eroded smooth particles of the rocks pass by the dunes, as the river feeds the Indian Ocean, they get deposited, like a drop-off, thus continuously feeding the striking golden dunes of Mambrui.
