History of Tsavo East National Park
Established in April 1948, Tsavo East National Park has an area of 13,747 sq. km. Together with Tsavo West National Park, the combined area forms the Tsavo National Park about 22,000 sq. km., one of the oldest national parks in Kenya Tsavo Ricer flows west to east through the national park located in Taita Taveta county. These two national Parks are governed by Kenya Wildlife Service.
Evidence of archeological fossils were recorded from the ground surfaces of Tsavo. According to research, the late stone age archeological sites are found close to the Galana River.
In early human settlement, the inhabitant hunted wild animals, fished and kept domesticated animals. Tsavo was a homeland for Orma Pastoralists and Watha hunters-gatherers until 1948 when it was gazetted as one of the national parks in Kenya.
This also championed for the park to no longer be a hunting ground and being handed over to be managed by Kenya Wildlife Service.
A dark cloud once shadowed the Tsavo National Parks in December 1898 which saw the Tsavo Lions attacking, killing and maiming at least 135 railway construction workers. This made the railway construction to come to a halt immediately. This horrific event made the Tsavo National Parks to be called, ‘Home of the man eaters’
