History of Tsavo East National Park Kenya

Established in April 1948, Tsavo East National Park has an area of 13,747 sq. km. Together with Tsavo West National Park, the combined area forms the Tsavo National Park about 22,000 sq. km.

This is one of the oldest national parks in Kenya. The oldest is Nairobi National Park.

Tsavo River flows west to east through the national park located in Taita Taveta County. These two national Parks are governed by the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Evidence of archaeological fossils was recorded from the ground surfaces of Tsavo. According to research, the late Stone Age archaeological sites are found close to the Galana River.

Another Kenyan Park with an archaeological site is Sibiloi National Park in Kenya.

In early human settlement, the inhabitants hunted wild animals, fished and kept domesticated animals.

Tsavo was a homeland for Orma Pastoralists and Watha hunters-gatherers until 1948 when it was gazetted as one of the national parks in Kenya.

This called for the park to stop being a hunting ground and be managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service.

A dark cloud once shadowed the Tsavo National Parks in December 1898 which saw the Tsavo Lions attacking, killing and maiming at least 135 railway construction workers.

The construction was stopped immediately. Tsavo East National Park in Kenya is located in Voi, Tsavo.
